Some popular Seagate models are suffering from spindle seizure problem which is an extremely severe problem. This type of data recovery procedure has been beyond our recovery process due the physical structure of the drives. SERT offers us a way to accomplish data recovery on these drives which were previously totally unrecoverable. Also SERT makes it possible to recycle the spare parts needed during the recovery process. This means reduced costs to update collection of spare parts. Since we started to have problems with the Seagate Barracuda with seized engines, some time ago, we add a few home made solutions to solve them, with an average success rate of 50%.
But with the new SERT tool, we raised that scale into 75% of the cases with seized spindles, so we consider a very good progress we were able to do with SERT tool.
The construction of the tool is quite good and well made, and I definitely think that is possible to have a very good ROI (Return of Investment) with this new tool.

Over the last couple of months we have received increasing numbers of Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 .11 .12 and ES2 Hard Disk Drives for data recovery. The Seagate Barracuda is by far the most popular hard disk drive in our market today.
We realised with concern that after firmware related hard disk drive failure the second most common cause was bearing failure/seizure. Symptoms of bearing failure include: Drive not spinning, and once opened in the clean room, the spindle cannot be turned or turns with difficulty.
We were unable to recover data from this type of failure. We were losing customers, as well as our good name, as our data recovery success rate greatly decreased. We knew we had to find a solution to ensure the success of our data recovery company.
We found the solution with SERT. SERT is a set of tools developed to assist the Data Recovery technician in the process of bearing / spindle swap, with the precision needed to keep drive tolerances at acceptable levels. With the purchase of SERT, Computer Science Labs provide a detailed course and demonstration in the use of SERT. The training is crucial as the procedure must be implemented accurately to achieve the desired results.
After I obtained the SERT tool set, I implemented the technique on six Seagate Barracuda hard disk drives over aperiod of a month until I was comfortable with the procedure. I then started working on clients hard disk drives with seized bearing / spindles.
I achieved great results recovering seven out of ten of these drives. Seventy percent of drives previously unrecoverable! Regarding the three hard disk drives that we could not recover, the possibility of invisible platter damage could not be excluded as damage between or underneath the uppermost platter surface cannot be seen.
The beauty of SERT is that in most cases there is no need for spares or donor hard disk drives, as the parts needed can be those used in previous recoveries.
I recently applied the same technique to a 1TB Hitachi hard disk drive. All the data was successfully recovered. SERT is a necessity in our Company.
