Seagate 7200.12 Firmware Fault – ‘SIM Error’

12/05/2010
A new firmware problem on Seagate 7200.12 series drives has been discovered by Computer Science Labs. When the affected drives are connected to the Serial Command Terminal they return a permanent ‘Busy’ status and in the serial command line the following outputs are displayed:

With PCB still attached to drive:

SIM Error 3005
No HOST FIS-ReadyStatusFlags 2002A1A5
ASCII Diag mode
With PCB detached from drive:
No HOST FIS-ReadyStatusFlags 2002A1A5

If users attempt to rectify the problem using the specific ‘Permanent BUSY and/or LBA=0’ solution, then this will not rectify the problem but will return the following response:

No HOST FIS-ReadyStatusFlags 2002A1A5
ASCII Diag mode
F3 T>/2
F3 2>Z
Spin Down Complete
Elapsed Time 6.015 secs
F3 2>
ASCII Diag mode
F3 T>/2
F3 2>U
HighPowerMode
ExecuteSpinRequest
Spin Up Complete
Elapsed Time 3.624 secs
F3 2>/1
F3 1>N1
Init SMART Fail

Although the drive will now successfully complete the Spin-up and Spin-down operation, the initialisation of the SMART module fails leaving the drive still unable to move on from a permanent ‘Busy’ state. This new fault is not restricted to the larger capacity 7200.12 drives such as the 500GB or 1TB, but can affect drives of any size from this series.

Computer Science Labs have been able to devise a solution to the problem. This solution is available to our partners. Please contact us for further information.
