 Salvation Data
Where data needs to be recovered from a defective drive, applications are required that can overcome such problems as ‘Bad Sectors’ to extract the required data in a suitable format to be recovered. This may be achieved by simply extracting the data in its ‘raw’ form or by using more ‘intelligent’ applications to target specific data types or formats.
Data Duplication is employed when the complete data content from a defective drive needs to be copied to another storage device so that it can be analysed or repaired from a ‘fault free’ medium or where the operation of the source drive is particularly unstable or deteriorating.
Duplication is also required in Forensic scenarios where analysis of data stored needs to be carried out, but where the original form of that data must be auditable and maintained in a way that does not compromise its evidentiary value. This involves the use of ‘Hashing’ techniques such as Cyclic Redundancy Checks (CRC) which can demonstrate that exact duplicates or ‘clones’ of drive contents have been made and that original ‘evidence’ has not been altered in any way during the analysis.
