Firstly there are applications designed to work directly with the drive to diagnose and repair the drives so that data that cannot be accessed by normal means can be retrieved. These applications have to be specifically designed to work with the varying characteristics of different manufacturers’ drives and even with different drive families and models. Such applications, with correct usage and training, can help the user to diagnose the nature of the fault, and rectify it. This may mean the replacement of items of HDD hardware, electronic repair of the onboard ‘firmware’ or restoration of the logical file systems used to store and access the user data. Where the applications mentioned above are not able to fully restore the HDD to normal use, it may be necessary to retrieve a copy of the ‘raw’ data from the defective drive for transfer to alternative storage media. Other software applications are available, both to extract or ‘Clone’ this raw data, and to analyse the subsequent data and extract actual user data files from it.
