| Introduction to RAID Systems Training Course |
1/2 Day
Code: CSL2005
Duration: 1/2 Day
Pre-requisites: Intermediate level – Some basic knowledge of Computer and Hard Drive systems advantageous but not essential
This training is intended to introduce clients to the concept of RAID multiple Hard Disk Drive (HDD) systems, their function, application and design together with an appreciation of the relative merits of the various RAID types and the criteria for their selection.
Learning Objectives:
(i) To provide an overview of basic RAID and other multiple HDD systems;
(ii) To examine the various RAID configuration types, both the common and the more specialised;
(iii) To explore the relative merits of the various types from both performance and fault tolerance perspectives;
(iv) To examine the behavior of the various types during disk failure scenarios;
(v) To examine the role of ‘Hot Spare’ disks;
(vi) To examine the criteria for the selection of the various types and the consequences for system costs, complexity and management considerations;
(vii) To analyse the various RAID attributes and parameters;
(viii) To explore the need for RAID system management, system documentation and correct fault responses;
The course will encompass the following aspects of RAID system architecture:
- Hardware and Software based RAID systems
- Striping
- Parity (including practical demonstrations of parity calculation)
- RAID types in combination
- Enhanced RAID systems
- Distributed/Dedicated Parity
- Forward/Backward Parity rotation
- Dynamic/Delayed Parity
- Hot and Cold spares
