HDD Electrical/Electronic and FLASH Storage Recovery
1 Day

Code: CSL1004

Duration: 1 Day

Pre-requisites: Entry level – No previous repair or data recovery experience necessary

This training course is intended for those with a basic knowledge of Hard Disk Drive (HDD) technology and principles. Where clients need to be introduced to electrical/electronic and FLASH storage recovery techniques, this training course would offer an excellent solution.

Learning Objectives:

(i) To provide a basic understanding of electrical/electronic components and circuit theory;

(ii) To introduce the role and usage of various electrical/electronic test equipment;

(iii) To provide a critical understanding of major types of electrical/electronic failure experienced by HDDs;

(iv) To explore various methods used to effect repair of different electrical/electronic failure scenarios;

(v) To introduce procedures for data recovery from FLASH memory storage systems;

Course Outline:

  • Basic introduction to electrical and electronic circuit theory and components (e.g. resistors, capacitors, inductors, transistors, crystals, fuses and diodes etc.). Diagnostic techniques using electronic multimeters and analogue oscilloscopes will also be introduced;

  • Electrical and electronic failure diagnosis and repair procedures - A variety of HDD fault scenarios will be examined, including common faults specific to manufacturers. Techniques involving the correct use of tools and test equipment (e.g. hot gun, solder gun, multi-meter, microscope etc.) to diagnose, repair or replace Printed Circuit Board (PCB) components will be also introduced.

  • Compatibility criteria for swapping of PCBs will be detailed across the range of major HDD manufacturers (Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi/IBM, Samsung, etc,). Exceptions where adaptive data is involved (ROM, NVRAM, etc,) will be also given.

  • USB pen drive failure diagnostic and repair procedure. The diagnosis of electronic, electrical and firmware faults using advanced electronic test and repair equipment will be developed;

  • Practical demonstrations and exercises of PCB component swapping, using hot gun and soldering equipment;
