Hitachi/IBM Technology Repair and Recovery
1 Day

Code: CSL1008

Duration: 1 Day

Pre-requisites: Basic HDD Data Recovery (CSL1001)

The course is intended to allow delegates who already possess a degree of knowledge and experience of Hard Disk Drive technology to get the very best out of the Hitachi/IBM HDD Doctor product. Delegates will also be given an in-depth understanding of Hitachi/IBM HDD theory, design and firmware architecture.

Learning Objectives:

(i) To provide a critical understanding of Hitachi/IBM HDD operation and physical design;

(ii) To provide an in-depth knowledge of Hitachi/IBM firmware structures and the operation and importance of crucial Service Area (SA) modules;

(iii) To develop diagnostic skills based on the Hitachi/IBM HDD Doctors;

(iv) To develop a comprehensive recovery procedure for most common problems with Hitachi/IBM HDDs;

Course Content:

Hitachi/IBM HDD design principal and firmware service area structure:

  • The range of models and family categorization, together with the compatibility and component matching criteria that need to be considered if components, PCBs, firmware and firmware modules are to be replaced or repaired.

  • The role and compatibility of other PCB component types, such as NVRAM (adaptive data), IC chips and passive electronic components (resistor, diode, fuse);

  • The architecture of drive firmware and firmware modules together with the role of specific key modules (RSVD, USAG, PSHT, RDMT, etc) and their functionalities and compatibility;

  • The key roles of various defect list such as P-list, G-list in drive operation and data recovery;
  • Head map and zone allocation table;

With reference to the Seagate HDD Doctor software, its operation in the following fields will be examined:

  • Diagnosis of various fault scenarios using information displayed in the software;

  • Head distribution analysis and management;

  • Firmware management, defect scanning and up/download procedures;

  • Firmware Module analysis and management;

  • Firmware ‘Library’ navigation and manipulation;

  • Service Area management and defect scanning;

  • HDD loading management ;

  • Definition of activating service area (SA-A, SA-B or SA-C) and the operation of switching the HDD into SA-C or ‘factory mode’;

  • NVRAM manipulation and repair, including service area positioning parameters and data area adaptive parameters repair;

  • Defect Lists, their management and manipulation;

  • Password manipulation and removal;

  • HDD parameter modifications;

  • Motor operation;

  • HDD power management;

Using the HD Doctor software and knowledge gained through the course, delegates will consider various case studies and undertake practical exercises as they apply to the various manufacturers in such operations as:

  • Rectification of ‘Undetectable’ drives by switching to SA-C;

  • Rectification of NVRAM corruption drives including the diagnostic procedure;

  • Rectification of data area adaptive parameters manually;

  • Unlocking ATA password protected drives;
