Western Digital Technology Repair and Recovery
1 Day

Code: CSL1006

Duration: 1 Day

Pre-requisites: Basic HDD Data Recovery (CSL1001)

The course is intended to allow delegates who already possess a degree of knowledge and experience of Hard Disk Drive technology to get the very best out of the Western Digital HDD Doctor product. Delegates will also be given an in-depth understanding of Western Digital HDD theory, design and firmware architecture.

Learning Objectives:

(i) To provide a critical understanding of Western Digital HDD operation and physical design;

(ii) To provide an in-depth knowledge of Western Digital firmware structures and the operation and importance of crucial Service Area (SA) modules;

(iii) To develop diagnostic skills based on the Western Digital HDD Doctors;

(iv) To develop a comprehensive recovery procedure for most common problems with Western Digital HDDs;

Course Content:

Western Digital HDD design principal and firmware service area structure:

  • The range of models and family categorization, together with the compatibility and component matching criteria that need to be considered if components, PCBs, firmware and firmware modules are to be replaced or repaired.

  • The role and compatibility of other PCB component types, such as FLASH memory (serial ROM and parallel ROM), other IC’s and passive electronic components (resistor, diode, fuse);

  • Head map assignment in different generations of Western Digital drives;

  • The physical architecture of drive firmware and firmware modules together with the role of specific modules and their functionality and compatibility;

  • The key roles of various defect lists such as P-list and G-list in drive operation and data recovery;

  • Head map and zone allocation table;

With reference to the Seagate HDD Doctor software, its operation in the following fields will be examined:

  • Diagnosis of various fault scenarios using information displayed by the software;

  • Head distribution analysis and management;

  • Firmware management, defect scanning and up/download procedures;

  • Firmware Module analysis and management;

  • Firmware ‘Library’ navigation and manipulation;

  • Service Area management and defect scanning;

  • HDD loading management ;

  • Firmware module physical location shifting;

  • Defect Lists, their management and manipulation;

  • ROM content manipulation;

  • Password manipulation and removal;

  • HDD parameter modifications;

  • Motor operation;

Using the HD Doctor software and knowledge gained through the course, delegates will consider various case studies and undertake practical exercises as they apply to the various manufacturers in such operations as:

  • Rectification of ‘Undetectable’ drives recognized as ‘XYZ’;

  • Rectification of clicking drives;

  • Rectification of physical defects in service area;

  • Unlocking ATA password protected drives;
