Firmware Principles

This training is intended to introduce clients to the concept Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Firmware (FW), its role and architecture together with an appreciation of techniques for FW diagnosis and rectification.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To provide an overview of the role of HDD firmware;

  2. To examine the basic architecture and configuration of FW;

  3. To outline the techniques for diagnosing and rectifying firmware failures;



The course will encompass the following aspects of HDD FW:

  • The role of firmware

  • The architecture of individual FW subprograms or modules

  • The location and storage of FW within HDD’s

  • The characteristics of various FW module types:


    • Executive

    • Parametric and Textual

    • Adaptive Data


  • The role of defect lists such as:


    • P-List

    • G-List

    • T-List


  • FW fault diagnosis & rectification

  • FW applications
